In less than half of the month Ramadan is fast approaching where our Muslim brothers and sisters worldwide are observing this “Holy Month”. For Muslims, this is the time of the year to practice self-restraint through fasting without food and drinks, sacred prayers, reading the Holy Koran, helping those in needs and avoiding unnecessary acts.

Fasting during Ramadan is considered as one of the 5 pillars of Islam as this activity is being observed on a daily basis. Our body will surely adjust during this period, it means people who are fasting are prone to dehydration and headaches. However, there are ways to keep fasting during Ramadan as healthy as possible.

Here are some tips to keep you healthy while fasting in the coming Ramadan:

Meal before dawn is important - “Suhoor”

Since you are entering into a strict fasting the whole day, it is important not to miss the first meal of the day. Try to include some whole-wheat food product in your diet because it will take around 6-7 hours to digest and help you not to feel hungry easily. Breakfast before dawn will help you active and energized during the whole day.

Do not overeat during Iftar

It would be a long day for everyone who fasts during this season. At the time of Iftar, it is wrong to overeat as it will give you discomforts such as indigestion and dehydration. It is better if you could break your fast with dates, milkshakes and a sugarcane juice, these are a good source of energy. Taking your Iftar meals should always consist of a well-balanced meal, never overeat and high-fat dishes are not a good choice.

Keep out from unhealthy meals

Try to eat a clean and balanced meal as much as possible. Keep out from unhealthy meals such are those high in fat, too much salt, too much sugar and spicy food. A balanced diet is consist of a proper amount of carbohydrates, protein, fruits and vegetable during iftar. For your late evening meal try to include some seafood contains low in fat and cholesterol and rich in proteins, vitamins, minerals and Omega 3 fatty acid.

Hydrate yourself

Iftar and Suhoor are the only time water can be ingested so drink plenty of water as frequently than you do. Drink at least 8 glasses a day before dawn and after sunset. Avoid soft drinks, caffeinated drinks like coffee and teas as it has a diuretic effect that can cause dehydration. Buttermilk (Laban) are a good healthier option during this whole month fast.

Make sure to have enough rest

Fasting in Ramadan can make a lot of difference from your regular days. During this period, you must control all your energy during the daytime, try to avoid erroneous activities and allow your body to rest. Take a good night sleep in order for your body to recharge and repair its cells so you can be ready for another fasting day.

These are just some of the few tips in order for you to stay healthy while fasting during Ramadan.
